Casually Chilling in Venice. Nbd, (Study Abroad Post Week 7)

This past week, we spent the day in Venice (or Venezia in Italian), the city of Bridges. Pictured it the Rialto Bridge, one of the most famous and oldest bridge in the city that crosses the Grand Canal. The Ponte di Rialto was built in 1588 and stands strong until this day, although many were skeptic about its fate due to its unique design. It originally was a pontoon bridge named Ponte della Monte after the mint that was grown by one of the entrances. Now, it is known for its breathtaking views of the canals and the many shops that line its edges. The biggest culture shock to me during my time in Venice was the fact that the Venetians spoke a completely different type of Italian than what I was used to in Florence. I'm absolutely not fluent in Italian, but I know enough to recognize key phrases. So getting to experience how the culture had changed from being isolated on this makeshift island was so interesting. It was like the Italian version of a southern twang.

  1. Hey Alissa! I have really enjoyed getting to see your posts about what you have been doing during study abroad and let me tell you I am very jealous because there are not views like that in Montgomery!! That's really amazing how long the bridge has been standing. I think its very interesting how much a language can change just by going different places. I'm sure it has been hard to get used to going somewhere and not knowing the language. I hope you have a great rest of your time in study abroad. Hurry back!!
